MEET Med PaLM – GOOGLE’S MEDICAL AI

AI – artificial intelligence – is changing the way the world of medicine appears and operates.

Currently, AI functions are an integral part of a wide array of medical products and digital systems. AI enables early detection and diagnosis of pathological findings while analyzing imaging tests, diagnosing illnesses in their early stages for patients of at-risk populations, customizing medications to a wide range of diseases, and assisting physicians in reaching insights and conclusions relative to the best treatment decisions.

The scope of use for systems integrating AI is expanding because AI’s stunning capabilities have been embedded into advanced technologies and medical diagnostic and treatment tools. At the same time, AI’s popularity also requires relating to highly important aspects such as privacy and medical discretion.

Google, the mega technology platform, recently publicized that its researchers have developed Med-PaLM, an AI platform for the medical field. Aiming to make the technology more accessible, Google’s researchers trained the innovative system to match USA government-determined levels of medicine as a means of testing MedPaLM’s development so far.

Google’s medical AI platform was able to successfully and convincingly answer some of the toughest questions that the American medical board sets, producing the highest level of precision compared to other medical AI systems.

In actuality, the AI program was given a 67.7% grade by American authorities, compared to a 60.2% grade for the Codex system. It’s worth noting that the pass grade for students aiming to qualify as physicians stands at 60%. In other words, AI not only passed the exams but showed improved statistics relative to the standard in no small number of exams and tests, the answers provided are no less correct than those of human doctors for the more common questions on issues of health and medicine put to search engines.

MedPaLM successfully answers health questions like a human physician

Currently, available smart clinic management software based on AI interfaces with wearable devices and medical equipment to conduct tests and provide treatment. AI aims to assist physicians in making decisions and optimally adjusting medical treatments by personalizing them to the patient’s individual needs. Google’s platform is certainly showing good capabilities, making it an important facet in this sphere.

Of note is the fact that Google’s researchers trained its AI on 6144 TPUs, which is a massive processing force for a single model. To train and fine-tune its AI system, Google’s researchers exposed it to a massive amount of text in multiple languages from online documents, books, concepts described in Wikipedia, high-quality digital content, and more. Once the system was trained to perform tasks that require language comprehension, Google’s researchers trained its AI program via precise instructions to provide the program with a store of medical answers.

Dr. Google is at your service!

We all use Google in our searches for information and to find answers on countless and varied topics. Developing the MedPaLM AI platform is expected to change how we receive medical opinions. Yes, it’s still too early to crown Google as the top doctor when it comes to real-time medical issues, but the day doesn’t seem to be far off when we’ll be able to receive an additional opinion from the doctor if the AI response doesn’t satisfy us or is insufficiently detailed.

The impressive capabilities being shown by medical AI are expected to change the way we access medical services and consultancy on all health issues. The more the system improves, and the more precise its answers become, making it more reliable, the more its assistance will optimize. Additionally, medical AI carries important advantages because it can replace human doctors, support medical teams, and accessible remote medical services in light of the constant shortage of doctors and medical staff, including in developed countries.
